Choosing Sustainable Sites
Before construction of a building even begins, many choices are made that significantly influence a project’s impact. Taking care when selecting a site, preparing it for construction, and landscaping can make a big difference. The following are some general guidelines to follow:

Selecting a Site
  • Avoid sensitive habitat areas and floodplains.
  • Build on infill lots, close to services.
  • Orient the building to take advantage of the sun for heating and light.

Preparing a Site
  • Analyze the conditions of the site to create a good design.
  • Capture and treat stormwater.
  • Minimize pavement.
  • Preserve existing vegetation.
  • Protect the soil.

Landscaping
  • Group your plants according to water needs for efficient watering.
  • Select native, low water use plants.
  • Use trees and shrubs to provide shade and reduce cooling needs.
