Gallery at the Airport
The Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art at the University of Oregon presents:
“Betty LaDuke: Picturing Latin America.” The works in this exhibition are from a recent acquisition to the collection at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art and represent the bodies of work from Betty LaDuke's first visit to Mexico in the 1950s and subsequent trips to various countries in Latin America in the 1970s and '80s. Currently residing in Oregon, LaDuke has traveled to locations spanning five continents, but it was her first international experiences in Mexico that developed an enduring interest in the people  of Latin America.

LaDuke was born in the Bronx, New York, in 1933. Her early interest in art was fostered in an ethnically diverse community where she was raised by working-class parents who had emigrated from Russia and Poland. After graduating from the prestigious High School of Music and Art in Harlem in 1950, she briefly attended the University of Denver followed by the Cleveland Institute of Art. In 1953, she attended the Instituto Allende in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. It was during this cultural exchange that the key elements of her artistic practice were realized.

Her commitment to representing Latin Americans and Latinos through art is also demonstrated  by a permanent installation at the Rogue Valley International Airport in Medford, Oregon, called, Celebrating Local Farms and Farmworkers.

About the Gallery at the Airport
The Gallery at the Airport opened in November 1994 on the second floor landing of the Eugene Airport terminal building. The Gallery is a permanent space for exhibitions of visual art and artifacts reflecting the artistic and cultural resources of the region. It provides an artistic greeting for businesses and leisure travelers, strengthens the image of the region as rich in cultural assets, and supports the visual arts and the creative work of our regional artists.

Located on the secure side of the terminal building, in a 600-square foot open area at the top of the escalator, the Gallery at the Airport features professional art display panels, pedestals with locking Plexiglas covers, and lighting. The main exhibit focus has been on presenting original work of local and regional artists, but has also featured presented works from collections of local and regional institutions or artwork by outside artists when related to a major event in the Eugene area. The Gallery had a captive audience of approximately 800,000 total passengers traveling through the Eugene Airport annually.

Guided by long-time supporters Randy Stender and Dottie Chase, the Gallery at the Airport is currently managed through a consortium of local non-profit arts organizations; including the Downtown Initiative for the Visual Arts (DIVA), the Emerald Art Center, the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art, Jacobs Gallery at the Hult Center, and the Lane Community College – Division of Arts.
