| Jack White 8:00 PM
Silva Concert Hall
Presented by Monqui Presents
-Sold Out-
Born the youngest of ten children, raised in Southwest Detroit and a resident of Nashville since 2005, Jack White is one of the most prolific and renowned artists of the past fifteen years.
When the White Stripes started in 1997 no one, least of all Jack, ever expected that the band would take hold in the mainstream world. With the release of 2001's White Blood Cells the band was thrust on magazine covers and captivating audiences through worldwide touring. "Fell in Love With a Girl" served as the band's breakthrough hit and its accompanying Michel Gondry Lego clip was chosen by Pitchfork Media as the #1 music video of the 2000's.
In 2004 White teamed up with Loretta Lynn to produce and perform on her Van Lear Rose album, an effort that won Grammy Awards for Best Country Album and Best Country collaboration with vocals for the single "Portland, Oregon." To date White has won nine Grammys in seven different categories.
White formed a new band of old friends, the Raconteurs, in 2006 and their debut album Broken Boy Soldiers showed a markedly different side, most notably one where songwriting, vocal and guitar duties were shared.
To take it even further, in 2009 White took to his original instrument, the drums, and started the Dead Weather with members of the Kills, Queens of the Stone Age and the Greenhornes. Releasing two albums in two years and unleashing a dark, captivating live show upon curious audiences, the Dead Weather further-cemented Jack White's musical versatility and range.
In January, White announced the upcoming release of his album Blunderbuss.

| Oregon Bach Festival: Joshua Bell plays Mendelssohn 7:30 PM
Silva Concert Hall
Acclaimed as " the most celebrated American-born violinist of the modern era" (Elle Magazine) and "one of the 50 most beautiful people in the world" (People), Joshua Bell has enchanted audiences worldwide with his breathtaking virtuosity and the captivating tone he produces from his Stradivarius violin. For his OBF debut, he has chosen Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto, the composer's most celebrated contribution to the world of orchestral music. Bell, a consummate showman, takes the Mendelssohn one step further, performing his own cadenza (an extended solo) at the high point of the work. The fireworks continue with the Italian Symphony, Mendelssohn's picturesque impression of a journey made as a young man, and the exciting choral work The First Walpurgisnacht, where Druids stage a raucous masquerade to fend off foreign occupiers during a stormy night on Harz Mountain.

| Oregon Bach Festival: Inside Line--A Child of Our Time 6:30 PM
Soreng Theater
Linda Hathaway Bunza offers insights into the social and cultural forces that shaped Michael Tippett's A Child of our Time, a reaction to World War II that became one of the 20th century's most important choral works. |
| Oregon Bach Festival: A Child of Our Time 7:30 PM
Silva Concert Hall
Presented by Oregon Bach Festival
Compelled by the needless suffering he witnessed in World War II, British composer Michael Tippett created the modern choral masterwork A Child of Our Time. Its story concerns an act of justice in a time of war. But its effect is one of urgency and somber beauty, like the work it was modeled upon, Bach's St. Matthew Passion. Tippett integrated American spirituals such as Steal Away, Go Down Moses, and Deep River in place of the Passion's chorales to reach the deepest levels of our common humanity. Its haunting narrative and rich climaxes embrace both the shadow and light of our collective whole.
Conductor Matthew Halls, who will succeed Helmuth Rilling as artistic director following the 2013 Festival, opens this concert with Bach's Lutheran Mass in G Major. Its lovely meditative fugues and celebratory Gloria are among the movements that Bach freely borrowed from his finest cantatas.

As the members of Bach's congregation filed into the pews of the St. Thomas church on Good Friday in 1727, little could they imagine that the music they were about to hear, composed by the cantor and cappellmeister in their employ, would become one of the towering statements of Western civilization. Bach's setting of the events in Matthew's gospel leading to the crucifixion goes beyond the profound drama of the unfolding events to illuminate the great bond of humanity it represents - a sharing of the gravest of sorrows and, ultimately, the promise of redemption.
