News and Events Available as Web News FeedsImportant Eugene does not recommend, provide support for, or endorse any particular news feed channel or program.
City News and Events
News and events featured on the City Home page are available as syndicated news feeds. Currently (March, 2007), the feed titles found on the Eugene home page at www.eugene-or.gov include:
City of Eugene News and Events
City of Eugene Events and Activities
Using Real Simple Syndication (RSS) mark-up technology, updates to these sections can be read using any software program that aggregates RSS news feeds. Subscribers add the news feeds to their news aggregation software list of subscribed content.
Once subscribed to an RSS feed, an aggregator checks for updates at user-determined intervals and retrieves the content. This dynamic allows updates to be "pulled" to the subscriber, as opposed to "pushed" with e-mail. The subscriber can easily elect to unsubscribe from a feed without requesting to be removed from a list.
Eugene typically publishes updates each week.
Notes
Many RSS news reader software programs are available without charge on the Internet.
News readers are available that use various delivery channels to collect and present feeds. Delivery channels include e-mail, desktop operating systems (Mac, Windows, and Linux), web sites like Yahoo or Google, web browsers, and handheld devices.
Techniques to subscribe vary by software program.
Eugene introduced RSS news feeds in Feb., 2007. Staff then planned to gauge community interest in using news aggregators to receive updated content.
