Native American Culture: Then & Now

Saturday, July 28

A talk by Linda S. Clare, author of the novel “The Fence My Father Built."

Using her novel “The Fence My Father Built” as a backdrop, Linda S. Clare explores Native American culture and the ways it has changed since the Indian Wars of the Old West. From the Indian Schools to relocation programs, Native Americans have been subjected to forced cultural changes that shocked and traumatized tribes. Part Cherokee and Choctaw herself, Clare discusses the ongoing disputes over Native sacred burial grounds and artifacts.

Clare is an award-winning co-author of books including “Lost Boys and the Moms Who Love Them,” “Revealed: Spiritual Reality in a Makeover World,” and “Making Peace with a Dangerous God.” Her essays, stories, and poems have been published widely including in The Christian Reader, The Denver Post, and The Philadelphia Inquirer. She also teaches writing, and edits and mentors writers.
