EPD Crime Prevention
Spreading the Word
SUMMARY: Crime Prevention seeks to educate students even before classes begin. Thousands of flyers, coffee sleeves and person to person contacts will give students the tips they need to protect their property this school year.
With the return of students to the area universities brings a new opportunity to provide helpful tips to a population often seen as “target rich” by property thieves. As part of the Property Crimes Reduction Strategies, the Crime Prevention Unit in partnership with the University of Oregon, the UO Department of Public safety and many volunteers will be proactively focusing their efforts this week in the areas of high student populations, to help neighbors become “harder targets” against crime. The six-day operation will include contacting residents, door-to-door, offering crime prevention information and services, distributing more than 10,000 coffee sleeves bearing crime prevention information to local coffee vendors, and several days of a traveling mobile station where students and parents can meet face to face with crime prevention specialists. The team’s main prevention focus will relate to burglaries, thefts from vehicles, and thefts of vehicles.
As with many areas with high density living the Kinsrow Avenue area and the general University neighborhoods have had a high rate of property crime. The Eugene Police Crime Prevention Unit is hoping their pre-emptive educational approach will help make residents more difficult to victimize. Staff would also like one outcome of the outreach events to be a rise in awareness of property crime issues and avenues to report suspicious behaviors.
Staff and volunteers will be at the following locations in the Kinsrow Avenue area at the beginning of the operation prior to moving to the West University and Campus area neighborhoods for the remainder of the time. Staff will also be on campus during the “Unpack the Quack” move in day for on-campus University of Oregon Students.
